Going Rogue with Pathfinder RPG - Initial character building
And now for something a bit different...
Pathfinder RPG
In a change of pace from my usual Infinity fare, i've been looking into gathering a few friends for some laid back RPG adventuring. It's something I have never done, despite playing lots of RPG video games, and mostly being around people who have or do tinker with them. So I thought i'd give it a whirl, and get that stamp on my nerd card.
Initially, I wanted to play a sci fi RPG that was set in a similar universe to Infinity. Several were suggested that look good, but for a few reasons the group couldn't settle on one. I really do hope Corvus Belli does an Infinity RPG in the future, as I think the universe lends itself well to it. But for now, we went the very well trodden fantasy route. With Pathfinder familiar to many (except me), and we have access to a veteran Games Master.
I do enjoy sci fi more, but have been known to don a hooded cloak and grab my bow. Video games like Baldurs gate, Elder Scrolls and more recently Dragons Dogma have all kept my attention. So I can immerse my self in a fanatsy setting.
What appeals to me is a love for creating characters, which is evident by the many names and backgrounds I have given to my table top armies. I also enjoy getting deep into a good story and adventure, so think I will enjoy this.
A Rogues Tale
For my character, I often gravitate towards the Rogue type builds, so filled that slot in our party. Being new, I decided to keep it simple and pick a straight up Rogue, but Ninjas and Assassins sounded fun too.
Beyond that I hit the net for knowledge on setting up a my Rogue for his adventuring. There is a ton of good stuff out there, but I found it overwhelming as a new player. So I focused more on making a character with a story rather than maxing stats, which is what I think makes a good RPG right?! I picked up enough tips to not to make him troll food and die in the first scrap, but by and large he is driven by his story. Here is the back story I came up with:
Half Elf - Rogue - chaotic good
Mithrildir 'Silver' Moonrunner
Mithrildir, or SIlver as he goes by, was born of an elven mother and a human father. His mother, a rough around the edges successful smuggler and fence, raised Silver for most of his younger life. Where he was influenced by many interesting and questionable types, in many questionable places.
All he knew of his human father was that he was a ranger, who after being disgraced in some way, had retreated to the outskirts of society. Where he met his mother, who initially struck up a deal to help him disappear, but ended up falling for his charm after one rum too many on the road. Before disappearing into the night, his father left his mother a pendant that he said was of considerable value. Despite numerous attempts to discover it's worth, Silvers mother never managed to decipher the value, and gave it to her son to play with and keep.
Silver became accustomed to traveling, even more so due to his mixed heritage never letting him truly settle any place. But blessed with his fathers charm, and with a glint in his eye, he is often able to leverage what he needs. If the charm fails, he is a talented con man, forger and thief, with a weakness for expensive works of rare art.
Times for SIlver were good indeed, until a few moons ago, when he was happily conning an obnoxious but wealthy duchess. In her substantial collection of art, he noted a small painting of her recently deceased husband. Of interest was the pendant the nobleman wore around his neck. So on a cool summers evening, after many goblets of wine, he coaxed the story out of her. The pendant was one of three, that was rumored to form some type of map when placed together. To where or what she didn't know, only that her late husband had many secrets he took to the grave. Of his pendant, she had sold it on to a traveling collector.
After a sleepless night spinning his fathers pendant in his hands, Silver was gone before sunrise. He simply had to find the other two pendants, and what mysteries they pointed to. Along the way he might even meet some more questionable people, and pick up some rare treasures for his collection…
Additional notes:
• Goes by the name 'Silver', as it was his mothers pet name for him, and is easy to spell for most people.
• Prefers to avoid combat if he can, but has been trained in the use of several weapons and evasive fighting styles. Most notable being the 'package punch' taught to him by the bearded lady.
• Has never been caught, but has been linked with several high profile art thefts. Including the Busty Maiden by Picassan, and The Lost Cow by Moodrian.
• Has a taste for fine living, and grumbles about any weather that isn't perfect.
• Once broke into prison to steal a vintage bottle of Port.
So there he is...but what about the others?
Now it's a Party
The rest of the group will consist of:
Half Elf - Barbarian
Elven - Magus
Human - Alchemist
Human -Paladin
They are still working on their back stories in anticipation of our first adventure in June. But should make for an interesting mix.
More on this soon, specially as I have a model I want to paint up to represent my Rogue. And if you play Pathfinder then do drop any hints or tips below!
